Things are really hectic right now with EVERYTHING. I've ordered the hardcover proof for The Latham-Fielding Liaison for the Secret Gateways box set and it should be arriving soon. I made some headway on formatting for the Gateways to Abomination hardcover and then last month we got our new lease in the mail and found out our rent would be going up way beyond our means in September. And between that and the fact that this year, Tennessee has become <a href="https://www.lgbtmap.org/equality-maps/profile_state/TN" target="_blank">literally the worst state in the US when it comes to LGBTQ laws</a> mostly because of several laws introduced this year that particularly <a href="https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-transgender-laws-b8d81d56287d6ed9d56c5da2203596b0" target="_blank">target the rights of transgender folks</a>, we decided to try and find a new place to live outside of Tennessee and started a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-the-wilsons-move-out-of-tennessee" target="_blank">GoFundMe</a> to help accommodate that move. I have since made an arrangement with our landlord so that we can stay at our current rate until the end of September.</p><p>At this point however, since we still have a lot left to raise and our granddaughter who lives with us has started homeschooling through a program specific to the state of Tennessee and we can't seem to find a good affordable alternative in the other places we're looking at to possibly move to, it's looking like we're going to have to find another place here in Tennessee for at least another year. So any donations to our GoFundMe will be put back toward when we ARE able to move to a less hateful state. But obviously, we still have to find a place and be moved out by the end of September. So, needless to say, EVERYTHING I have been working on has gotten slowed down a whole bunch. So, at this point, with the move likely happening around mid to late September, it's looking like it'll be October before we can go to press with both The Latham-Fielding Liaison and the Secret Gateways box set. I wish I had better news, but unfortunately, things are out of my control right now. </p><p>One more thing I want to touch on is Nox Pareidolia. I am still sifting through the chaos in the wake of my medication issues earlier this year so if you pledged for and never received a copy of Nox, please let us know in an email and I'll get that shipped out to you as soon as possible. </p><p>Anyway, again, I wish I had better news. I hope you are all well and I'm really sorry for how slow going and jumbled all of this has been. Take care and keep safe, folks.</p><p><br /></p><p>Sincerely,</p><p>RSW </p>robertswilsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01305028306537384037noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-200297564678036538.post-10174654557181924562021-06-18T14:24:00.000-07:002021-06-18T14:24:14.861-07:00Secret Gateways Boxset Update<p>By the end of this month we will have proof copies ready to look over for two of the three volumes in the Secret Gateways boxset: <i>The Latham-Fielding Liaison</i> and <i>Gateways to Abomination</i>.</p><p>Due to a change in the TOC, <i>The Secret of Ventriloquism</i> will be slightly further delayed but we hope to have the proof copy for it ready by mid July.</p><p>If all goes as planned (which I cringe to say at this point), the set should be shipping out to folks in late July or early August. </p><p>If you missed out on why there has been a hold up thus far this year, you can <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertswilson/diapause-by-dream-static/posts/3209908?fbclid=IwAR35TiH6R74C54j0rC9T1CUP9FN1Lq-269gWTSj0mK8sJUhSEwrW1X15KDc" target="_blank">read my most recent update to the Diapause Kickstarter</a> for more details. Wilson<br />Nightscape Press</div>robertswilsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01305028306537384037noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-200297564678036538.post-173992761770189732021-01-12T23:40:00.002-08:002021-01-12T23:40:35.655-08:00Updates, Etc.<p style="text-align: justify;">Hi folks, I apologize that we are behind on shipments and correspondence. Between the holidays and some health issues, I've been struggling to keep up with shipping demands while also balancing that with editing demands and now the backlog of both of those things has caused me to build up a backlog of email queries that need responding to. So, all of this has begun to avalanche together. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">And to top all that off, raging ADHD plus my doctor going out of town just before I needed to refill my meds that can only be refilled via a paper script in person really knocked me for a loop this past few weeks, making it so I've had about three hours a day, if I'm lucky, where I'm actually able to focus and get ANYTHING done. Today I was finally able to get my meds and so hopefully starting tomorrow I'll be able to make a lot more progress on getting caught up. Please hold any queries until the end of the month unless they're an emergency as our inbox is so full right now that I can't even tell one email from another lately. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Just to try and cover some of the questions that have come my way in the midst of all the craziness that has been the end of last year and the little bit of this year so far, here's a list of updates on various projects etc:</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li style="text-align: justify;">Secret Gateways is not yet ready for production. I have been struggling to juggle editing and formatting duties with shipping duties. I'm hoping to have editing finished any day now so long as I can get enough time away from scrambling to ship books and reply to emails to be able to focus enough on them.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">As such, The Latham-Fielding Liaison is also not ready for production as it's a major component of what I still need to finish going over in Secret Gateways.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">I apologize to anybody who pre-ordered The Latham-Fielding Liaison on Amazon for the pre-order getting canceled. On Christmas day it was all too obvious the book wasn't going to be ready in time so I set it up in Kindle Direct Publishing to push it back with ample time according to Amazon's rules and my changes showed as successful within the book's info but when I went out to the list of titles it still showed as scheduled for the original December release. I made the stupid mistake of assuming it was fine since I see these kinds of quirks all the time with KDP. Next thing I know we get an email saying we didn't upload the final manuscript in time and they were canceling the pre-order. I contacted them and they agreed to not penalize us for it since we had set it up but they informed us that once they've canceled a pre-order, they cannot <i>un</i>cancel it. So, we would have to relist the book and frankly with everything else on my plate right now, I'm a lot more concerned with getting the book ready than I am with getting a pre-order page on Amazon considering I've already done that once. When the book is ready, we'll publish it.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">With those two titles accounted for, color copies of Nox Pareidolia have been going out very slowly but we're picking up speed now. We should be able to get our shipping backlog of currently available titles caught up by the end of the month.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">If you ordered a book in mid December from outside of the United States with the expectation of receiving it by Christmas from a small press, I think you might just be allowing Amazon's shipping and fulfillment paradigm to skew your understanding of the resources that independent businesses have at their disposal. I would like to wish we had the resources to match Amazon's level of fulfillment service if it weren't for the fact that that very paradigm requires the consistent indecent treatment of human beings who they employ. I know because I was once one of them. </li><li style="text-align: justify;">Due to miscalculations of shipping costs and a number of other unexpected factors with our previous Kickstarter, if you ordered a bundle or an item that has extra items bundled with it from us via Kickstarter, from here on, all backer items in each individual order will be shipped together when they are all ready in order to save on extra shipping costs. I apologize for any inconvenience this will cause for folks but it's simply far too expensive to ship things separately as I had originally planned to. It has also managed to slow me down to an incredible degree trying to ship things individually and trying to keep track of what has and hasn't been shipped individually.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Unfortunately, the multi-anthology Kickstarter we had planned to launch in February to cover the costs of Endless, Nox Pareidolia II, and The Bleeding Rainbow is being temporarily postponed. We put a lot of thought into it and we refuse to do another Nightscape Kickstarter until we have all of our previous Kickstarter obligations caught up. The hope is that we'll be able to launch the KS in March.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">As such, between this delay of our original plans and my overall backlog of tasks, we have decided to push back the release of The Bleeding Rainbow to later this year. We'll update you all with more details when we pin down a more definitive release date.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Speaking of, unless I or another editor on one of these anthologies has invited you to submit a story, please do not query any of us via social media about submission guidelines. If you have a query, please send it to us via email. I get that that means it will obviously result in a delayed response but I personally am getting to the point where I'm going to start blocking people who unnecessarily query me about submissions via social media. If I stay on social media much longer. The fact that the recent events in DC even had to happen to get social media companies like Twitter and Facebook to finally do something about the very huge and awful problem that caused them to happen in the first place is more than a little disconcerting to me and I'm finding myself more and more unable to stomach the idea of continuing to contribute to the lining of their pockets. </li><li style="text-align: justify;">If you are one of the 200+ people who have queried me about your submission for Nox Pareidolia II, I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. If you would rather not wait any longer, please withdraw your story via Moksha and, if you sell it before we get a chance to consider it, do please consider sending us another story when we open to submissions again for the anthology. </li><li style="text-align: justify;">And finally, and this is not something I like having to say but I value our customers greatly. I've met some wonderful human beings through this company and some of my best friends right now are people who I met because of this past three years of our business. But please, folks, if you do not receive a response to your query, please, please, if you do not know us personally, aren't friends with us in real life or don't interact with us regularly on social media, please don't query us via private message to our personal social media accounts. You wouldn't track down the CEO of Comcast and send him a Facebook message if your cable guy was unexpectedly late, would you? We do this out of love for the books that we publish. We do it because we love weird and horror fiction. And frankly, some of the emails and messages I've received this past month have caused me to lose more than just a little bit of that fire. Please consider your actions and correspondence toward us before you send them. We are human beings too. </li></ul><div style="text-align: justify;">All that said, I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of things in this list but it's 1:40 am and I need to get some sleep. Happy New Year and thank you for your support and patience. </div><p></p><div style="text-align: justify;">Sincerely,</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Robert S. If you had asked me what that was more than a week ago I would have just shrugged. I know what Indiegogo is well enough. But InDemand? I had no clue about it. Until someone from Indiegogo reached out to me after this campaign ended. </span></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "maison neue book", "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 2.9rem; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="color: white;">Essentially, InDemand is a way to keep taking pre-orders after your fundraiser has ended, regardless of where you raised funds from. They essentially mirror your original campaign, show what you've raised thus far and any further purchases add to that total there. I honestly have no idea what to expect from this as I've never done this before. But, if you missed out on something you wanted from this campaign, perhaps this is a way to scratch that itch. Please consider sharing it around.</span></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "maison neue book", "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 2.9rem; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="color: white;">I do want to mention one more thing about this. One of the reasons it took so long to get this thing up there (they recommend having it up as soon as possible after your campaign) is that we agonized over whether to carry over our remaining stretch goals from this campaign. After giving it a lot of thought, we decided, given the possibility for further delay to the two main projects in doing so, we would just remove all unreached stretch goals from there. </span></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "maison neue book", "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 2.9rem; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/secret-gateways-nox-pareidolia/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><span style="color: white;"><img border="0" data-original-height="322" data-original-width="600" height="258" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pLgJUdXzovY/X0WbhWPJxoI/AAAAAAAAPxU/Vt-NoI3QntAutJwnikgDqeCmp2T1IowNACLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h258/InDemand.png" width="480" /></span></a></div><span style="color: white; font-size: 2.8rem;"><br /></span><p></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "maison neue book", "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 2.9rem; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="color: white; font-size: 2.8rem;">ENDLESS Plan B:</span></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "maison neue book", "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 2.9rem; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="color: white;">So, speaking of stretch goals, I didn't want to say anything until we had successfully funded this campaign given the fact that, had it failed, we would have been looking at the end of our little company overall . But, in the event that this campaign was successful, we have been planning a Kickstarter for some time for two forthcoming anthologies (Nox Pareidolia: Volume II edited by myself and our LGBTQ Pride Flag anthology The Bleeding Rainbow: A Spectrum of Weird Fiction edited by myself and Maxwell Ian Gold). ENDLESS spawned more from a desire for Jen and I to work on something new together and while we hoped it would be phenomenal, we had no idea just how awesome just the TOC would become. </span></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "maison neue book", "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 2.9rem; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="color: white;">As such, we have been considering different options for our plan B for this anthology, including considering going back to the drawing board for all three anthologies as far as how to go about this. The initial thought was to do one multi-anthology Kickstarter (to rule them all) for all three anthologies in one go. But given that we'd like to pay at least the SFWA pro rate of 8 cents per word for all three books and do deluxe color trade paperback editions of each of these titles, the goal for all of that in one Kickstarter would end up being kind of defeating. </span></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "maison neue book", "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 2.9rem; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="color: white;">As such, I'm seriously considering doing each book individually in shorter campaigns, either back to back or a month or so apart each. We would do them for one to two weeks for each campaign either later this year or early 2021. December is a no go though as research shows that December is the worst month of the year to run a Kickstarter, and I doubt that surprises anybody. So, at this point, we're looking at October or November, or maybe February or March. We are completely open to feedback on this. If you have any thoughts on when we should do this or if we should do them all in one campaign or break them up, comment and let us know. </span></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "maison neue book", "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 2.9rem; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://roosterrepublicpress.com/design-services/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><span style="color: white;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1325" height="800" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oin4xa__-jw/X0WcLowZ5-I/AAAAAAAAPxk/_3RLDTJr2Y0nIAXAVFK9359YqHL0EaoQACLcBGAsYHQ/w518-h800/Endless%2BCover%2Bhi-rez.jpg" width="518" /></span></a></div><span style="color: white; font-size: 2.8rem;"><br /></span><p></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "maison neue book", "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 2.9rem; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="color: white; font-size: 2.8rem;">Nox Pareidolia Has Won the 2019 This is Horror Award!</span></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "maison neue book", "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 2.9rem; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="color: white;">For those of you who haven't heard, Michael David Wilson and Bob Pastorella of the This is Horror Podcast have announced the winners of this year's This is Horror Awards by a different means than previous years. We launched <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertswilson/secret-gateways-and-nox-pareidolia" target="_blank">a brand new Kickstarter yesterday</a>. After our <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertswilson/ashes-and-entropy" target="_blank">2018 Kickstarter for Ashes and Entropy</a>, the success of both that campaign and our Charitable Chapbooks line as well as the incredibly positive reaction to Ashes and Entropy gave us a boost of confidence that led us to believe we could manage to launch these projects without the help of Kickstarter. This was a huge miscalculation on our part and one we've been struggling with trying to correct on our own for far too long.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Here is where you come in. We have all the content to create two amazing projects with full color artwork by brilliant artists like Harry O. Morris, Luke Spooner, Don Noble, and Aeron Alfrey, and fantastic stories by an astonishing array of talented horror and weird fiction authors.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">The Secret Gateways hardcover boxset will be a boxed set of three hardcovers including two modern classics of unsettling weird fiction: The Secret of Ventriloquism by Jon Padgett and Gateways to Abomination by Matthew M. Bartlett; and a third slim volume titled The Latham-Fielding Liaison consisting of four weird mind-bending tales written by both authors in collaboration with each other.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Nox Pareidolia is my fifth anthology and a Bram Stoker Award Finalist, a This is Horror Award Finalist, and an Indie Horror Award Finalist. The book was published in eBook and black and white trade paperback editions last year and includes stories by Laird Barron, S.P. Miskowski, Brian Evenson, Kristi DeMeester, Michael Wehunt, Gwendolyn Kiste, Zin E. Rocklyn, Christopher Ropes, Doungjai Gam, Alvaro Zinos-Amaro, Carrie Laben, Kurt Fawver, David Peak, Don Webb and Duane Pesice, Paul Jessup, K.H. Vaughan, and more. The plan is to publish a deluxe color trade paperback edition in the same stunning quality as our 2018 color trade paperback editions of Ashes and Entropy.</li></ul></ul></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertswilson/secret-gateways-and-nox-pareidolia" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="1655" data-original-width="1191" height="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CQdBxfwpNBE/Xw8HSJNEWtI/AAAAAAAAPrU/6tAGjzsswaMXXUqM7Nvf1GV4MY4XhLCPACLcBGAsYHQ/w360-h500/75366335_2158270457809955_7445542072104255488_o.jpg" width="360" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">We currently have a portion of the funds needed to produce these two projects but we still need more than we can reasonably raise on our own in a reasonable amount of time. So, we're doing <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertswilson/secret-gateways-and-nox-pareidolia" target="_blank">this Kickstarter</a> to fill our budget gap for these two projects and we believe we have a lot of great things to offer to help make that a reality. Yesterday the campaign kicked off with a bang and we made it all the way to 44% of our goal in the first 24 hours!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertswilson/secret-gateways-and-nox-pareidolia" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="Interior illustration from The Secret of Ventriloquism by Harry O. So, this time we're trying to focus more on the actual items we need to raise money for and keep the physical extras to a minimum.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But that doesn't mean we're not offering some amazing perks. We've got everything from eBooks of The Latham-Fielding Liaison and Nox Pareidolia to signed rarities that WILL NEVER BE AVAILABLE AGAIN like a one-of-a-kind brand new hand-sewn WXXT chapbook from Matthew M. Bartlett called Peak Deviations. And the bundles! There are bundles for everyone no matter whether you're a fan of eBook bundles at an incredible value or a super-collector looking for a bundle of rare spectacular books and other items to give a loving new home to. And then, for me, I think one of the greatest portions of what we have on offer are our non-physical rewards. Fantastic private Zoom entertainment like a Jon Padgett ventriloquist show with his non-human dummy, Reggie McRascal!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertswilson/secret-gateways-and-nox-pareidolia" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1325" height="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PhtvAm5ww4o/Xw8JkcVHGlI/AAAAAAAAPro/sm7YZ18omzMgv8aOEGp04mvA9UgH4qg1QCLcBGAsYHQ/w324-h500/GATEWAYS%2BINTERIOR%2BILLUSTRATION%2B-%2B10%2B-%2BTHE%2BSONS%2BOF%2BBEN%2BNUMBER%2B2.jpg" width="324" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Publishing Schedule</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If this campaign is successful, the release schedule will go as follows for all perks:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The following items are already on hand and as soon as funding transfers to us we will get them out to their corresponding backers (approximately late August):</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li style="text-align: justify;">Nox Pareidolia (eBook edition)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Nox Pareidolia (black and white trade paperback edition)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">The Latham-Fielding Liaison (paperback ARC)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Ashes and Entropy (color trade paperback)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Ashes and Entropy (signed color trade paperback)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">All signed unbound proofs (The Broker of Nightmares, If It Bleeds, Ashes and Entropy)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Charitable Chapbooks (The Broker of Nightmares, If It Bleeds, and The Invention of Ghosts)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">A&E Chapbooks (Dr. 999 & Yellow House)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Cadabra LPs (Call Me Corey and Origami Dreams)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Blood Standard (hardcover, signed and personalized)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Gateways to Abomination (signed and scribbled-in proof copy)</li></ul></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>September 2020:</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li style="text-align: justify;">Secret Gateways (hardcover boxset)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Nox Pareidolia (color trade paperback edition)</li></ul></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>December 2020:</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li style="text-align: justify;">The Latham-Fielding Liaison eBook edition</li><li style="text-align: justify;">The Latham-Fielding Liaison black and white trade paperback edition</li><li style="text-align: justify;">The Latham-Fielding Liaison limited color trade paperback edition</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Nightscape Press 30-Book eBook Bundle</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Bartlett/Padgett Zoom Q&A</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Jon Padgett Editorial Services</li></ul></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>January 2021:</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li style="text-align: justify;">Jon Padgett Zoom Ventriloquist Show</li></ul></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>March 2021:</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li style="text-align: justify;">Sons of Ben (signed limited chapbook)</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Peak Deviations (hand-sewn one of a kind chapbook)</li></ul></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robertswilson/secret-gateways-and-nox-pareidolia" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1375" height="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s72orwxVXgQ/Xw8J1w1Ku6I/AAAAAAAAPrw/edskiDG1WFkH4iQT9cLtIe8AvXyMJn-RQCLcBGAsYHQ/w336-h500/01%2BWatch%2BMe%2BBurn%2BArt.jpg" width="336" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">And of course, we do have some stretch goals waiting in the wings in the event that we reach our goal with enough time left over to reach them. Some electronic add ons for everyone as well as some really cool surprise additions to the Secret Gateways boxset, the Nox Pareidolia color trade paperback, and all editions of The Latham-Fielding Liaison! So, please. You can help us make these amazing books and help us make them even better. While this campaign is not for a new project, there is the possibility of a new project via the final stretch goal, should we get that far. More on that later.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div><b>Risks and challenges</b></div><div><br /></div><div>The biggest challenge to this project is funding. We have a two-year track history of working with the printer we'll be using for Nox Pareidolia (their quality is amazing, as anybody who owns a color copy of Ashes and Entropy or any of our Charitable Chapbook titles can tell you) and while the printer we'll be working with for Secret Gateways is new to us, their quality is superb as well and they are an industry leader with an exemplary record.</div><div><br /></div><div>For two years now we have been publishing our Charitable Chapbooks line and given that 1/3 of the proceeds of each of those titles goes to charity and another third goes to the author, the budget for those is very very tight. As such, we are not a profiting company. The two projects this Kickstarter is for were conceived at least partially to help bring in income toward the cost of running a small press with a focus on giving to charity and paying authors a fair rate. And, as mentioned above, unfortunately that plan blew up in our faces due to my own poor decision to avoid using Kickstarter for the amazing tool that it is.</div><div><br /></div><div>I won't lie, our Kickstarter for Ashes and Entropy was one of the most stressful experiences my family has ever gone through. You put a lot of yourself out there, it requires an incredible amount of your time, energy, and mental health, and there is no break, no half time. There's the goal and you and it can put you in a constant heightened sense of alert from the moment you launch until the moment you hit the finish line. Even after you've hit your goal.</div><div><br /></div><div>But, we learned a lot from the last Kickstarter and we are more mentally prepared to face this challenge this time. And we have a better handle on how to organize and run one of these things. But we also have a lot more to lose this time around. The biggest risk for us right now is the likelihood that, should we not meet this goal, the debt we've incurred in these projects will mean that we very well might have to close up shop as a publisher for good once we've refunded all previous pre-orders. But with your help, that won't have to happen and we can continue to make fantastic books of horror, weird fiction, fantasy, and science fiction while contributing to some of the most worthy and important charities working today and paying authors good money.</div></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>robertswilsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01305028306537384037noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-200297564678036538.post-40990771622527497492020-02-18T02:00:00.000-08:002020-02-18T02:00:05.776-08:00Slight Delay with Michael Cisco's Chapbook and More Updates!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Speaking of 100 copy chapbook runs, <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/watch-the-whole-goddamned-thing-burn-by-Doungjai-Gam-Charitable-Chapbook-pre-order/p/123866882/category=0" target="_blank">Charitable Chapbook #3, Doungjai Gam's "watch the whole goddamned thing burn"</a> is nearly halfway sold out. Gam is one of noir and horror fiction's best kept secrets and it's about time the cat got out of the bag. This chapbook will give 1/3 of its proceeds from the paperback edition to <a href="https://www.translifeline.org/" target="_blank">Trans Lifeline</a> (a charity that is very close to our hearts here at Nightscape Press given that Jennifer and Robert Wilson's daughter just came out as trans in 2018). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The novelette's gorgeous cover was created by <a href="https://www.matthewrevertdesign.com/" target="_blank">Matthew Revert</a>, and the book is also fully color illustrated by <a href="http://www.carrionhouse.com/home-page" target="_blank">Luke Spooner</a>. This is a perfect book to pick up for Women in Horror month, so <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/watch-the-whole-goddamned-thing-burn-by-Doungjai-Gam-Charitable-Chapbook-pre-order/p/123866882/category=0" target="_blank">grab up a copy! You won't regret it</a>. Gam's story cuts like a razor and leaves you gasping and wounded. As expressed by <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3159712922?book_show_action=true" target="_blank">this fantastic review over at Goodreads</a>. </div>

This disturbing tale takes a close look at white complicity in the face of racism while also managing to be both weird and incredibly disturbing in a supernatural way at the same time. 1/3 of all proceeds from this limited chapbook edition will go to <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/" target="_blank">the Southern Poverty Law Center</a> which is incredibly apropos to anybody who's read this story. <div style="text-align: justify;">
During the hot, quiet middle days of summer, four junior high school girlfriends looking for a secret place to smoke and drink stumble upon a monstrous, priapic statue of a demon inside the remains of a half-built house within an abandoned suburban construction site. Repelled at first, at the youngest girl’s suggestion they begin constructing a fantastic story around the statue, creating silly yet complex rituals to see which of them will be worthy enough to be declared the statue’s “queen.” But the rituals turn violent as the girls begin turning on each other, all of them insisting that the demon is real, visiting them in terrifying, wondrous sexual encounters that each girl wishes to make hers alone. By the summer’s end, only one of the four will be left standing to complete the rituals, capture the crown, and make the demon lover her own.</div>

in Chief of Nightscape Press. Before I get started, I must warn you this is
going to be a long one, so feel free to read the bolded portions and bulletin
points to get the TLDR version. I’m reaching out to you all about something
very important. Nightscape Press is about to start a huge new chapter. I was
recently informed that my day job employer’s contract with our client will not
be renewed and, as such, my employment upon the end of our current contract
will be coming to an end. While this was unfortunate news to receive, it comes
at a very interesting time for my family as my wife, co-owner and Co-editor in
Chief, Jennifer, has just started a new day job, and other things within our
household are shifting in such a way that <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">we
have decided, as a result of this news, for me to transition into focusing on
Nightscape Press full time</b>.</span></span></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large; text-align: justify;">What
does that mean for our future and for the future of our projects? Quite a lot.
It means that I will be able to put the kind of focus into this company that it
deserves. </span><b style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; font-size: x-large; text-align: justify;">It means that we have the
opportunity to start putting in place some of the strategies we’ve been working
on for literally years toward making us a successful and fully independent
publishing company. It also means that we could be at some financial risk in
the process of working to make that happen.</b><span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "maison neue book" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">So, they arrived! And by they, I mean the book proofs for <a href="https://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/blog-page.html" target="_blank">Ashes and Entropy</a>! These are unbound proofs, so they are loose pages and covers. It saves money to order proofs this way as the cost for binding adds a good chunk to the overall proof cost. Also, they do not laminate the covers for proofs so you won't get the full effect. These will be matte covers and let me tell you, this printer's matte is extremely gorgeous. Anyway, without further ado!</span><br />

So there's a few pics to give you an idea. After some small adjustments, we gave them the go ahead and they have since started the print run. <b>The current estimated ship (to us) date is February 8th and the estimated shipping time is two days.</b> And as soon as these arrive, we'll start shipping them out. Keep in mind though that we do have 200+ copies to ship though so it may take a bit of time for these to all make their way out but we'll do our best to get them to folks as fast as possible!</div>

<span style="font-family: "maison neue book" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">And last but certainly not least: one of our Kickstarter backers for Ashes and Entropy and a rising star of weird fiction publishing, </span>Charles P. <span style="font-family: "maison neue book" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://gehennaandhinnom.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Gehenna & Hinnom</a> is the name of the company and the novelette line will include authors like Christopher Ropes (a personal favorite new author of mine who you might be familiar with if you've read the first issue of <a href="https://vastarien-journal.com/" target="_blank">Vastarien </a>which included his amazing story "Singing the Song of My Unmaking." And, full disclosure, I've accepted a new piece of Christopher's myself for my late 2019 forthcoming anthology <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/submissions.html" target="_blank">Nox Pareidolia</a>!), S.L. Edwards, Kurt Fawver (who also has had a couple of phenomenal pieces in Vastarien among other places), and more. Their chapbook series will include pieces by Dennis Mombauer (whose amazing first English novel Nightscape Press just accepted for a late 2019/early 2020 release!), Ashley Dioces, and more.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "maison neue book" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "maison neue book" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">You can also pre-order their first two upcoming collections Whiskey and Other Unusual Ghosts by S.L. <br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-weight: 700;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...you might recall that in late June, early July, <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/Registration-for-the-2019-Nightscape-Press-Caribbean-Cabal-Charitable-Writers-Retreat-with-special-guests-Laird-Barron-and-John-Langan/p/127219361/category=0" target="_blank">we'll be doing a pretty fantastic <b>charitable writers retreat in Costa Rica with special guests Laird Barron and John Langan</b>!</a> There are still registration slots open for that so if this is the first you've heard about it or you've been thinking about registering, you'd better get on that before time runs out. It's shaping up to be a real blast for sure. And all of the proceeds that would go our way will instead go to <a href="https://srlp.org/" target="_blank">the Sylvia Rivera Law Project</a>!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our little operation, as of right now, consists of myself (Robert S. Wilson) and my wife, Jennifer Wilson. Some of you already know, but for those of you who don't, there is a very personal reason we have chosen <a href="https://srlp.org/" target="_blank">the Sylvia Rivera Law Project</a> as the charity to contribute the proceeds of this shindig to. Last year, our youngest child bravely came out as a transgender young woman and we couldn't be more proud of her for having so much courage.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, when we found ourselves in a position to do something huge for one organization, we decided to choose a charity that we knew from the personal experience of transgender friends would be able to do something wonderful with the money we raise. And with this event, that could end up being as much as $10,000! So this really means a LOT to us and we hope folks will help us make this as successful as possible.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In other news, we've also reworked <a href="https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=4241890&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nightscapepress.pub%2Fp%2Ftest-store.html%23!%2Fc%2F0%2Foffset%3D0%26sort%3Dnormal&utm_medium=widget" target="_blank">our Patreon </a>that we launched at the tail end of 2018. We went from a super limited quantity at a high price to a larger quantity at a more affordable cost. You can now <a href="https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=4241890&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nightscapepress.pub%2Fp%2Ftest-store.html%23!%2Fc%2F0%2Foffset%3D0%26sort%3Dnormal&utm_medium=widget" target="_blank">get in on our quarterly Classic Chapbook subscription of Patreon exclusive titles that we'll be launching this year along with a bunch of other perks for only $25 a month.</a> The first chapbook, A RAVEN IN MY VIEW, a collection of poetry by Edgar Allan Poe curated by myself and Jennifer Wilson, will be fully color illustrated by Luke Spooner and limited to 100 copies and we'll also be doing a deluxe edition of each of these chapbooks limited to 23 copies via some higher tiers on there. You can check out the cover for that one below on our release schedule.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Before I get into our release schedule though, I want to talk about <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/Ashes-and-Entropy-edited-by-Robert-S-Wilson-Pre-order/p/114849134/category=0" target="_blank">the paperback release of ASHES AND ENTROPY</a>. While the eBook edition is currently available <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/Ashes-and-Entropy-edited-by-Robert-S-Wilson-eBook-edition/p/115214045/category=0" target="_blank">from our website</a> and <a href="http://mybook.to/ashesandentropy" target="_blank">from Amazon</a>, unfortunately, we are still running behind on the paperback release. At this point, it's looking like the A&E paperbacks will be a late January/early February release.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But... for those of you who were Kickstarter backers or who pre-ordered from our website, we will be doing everything we can to make that up to you. For instance: for those of you who bought the black and white edition... you won't be getting it. Instead, you'll be getting the color edition! It has been decided that the black and white edition will be retail only!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, you've all been upgraded at no extra cost. For those of you waiting on the color edition, you'll also be getting a very lovely Matthew M. Bartlett Witch Cult postcard and everybody who backed the KS or pre-ordered a paperback copy of the book will get a very significant discount code for <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/c/0/offset=0&sort=normal" target="_blank">our webstore</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As to why we're running behind? Well... there are a lot of reasons. A lot of little reasons and a couple big ones. I received way more story submissions than I expected for my open call and it took me longer than I intended to decide on the final two stories. I received a couple of final stories from solicited authors late which unfortunately happens sometimes. Authors are humans with families and complex lives just like the rest of us. And speaking of being human... We're actually just about done fixing some formatting errors that managed to sneak into the galleys. And unfortunately, the way in which we format is a bit more complex than most companies and so that has been quite a process.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And one of the bigger things that became a problem early on is that our printer was absolved by another company. And we've had nothing but bad experiences with the new company so we had to find a whole new printer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We gave them a test run with The Broker of Nightmares by Jon Padgett and for those of you who grabbed up a copy of that book, you know that the level of quality they produce is absolutely superb. Way better than anything we've produced in the past. And working with a new printer means working with new guidelines and a different cost structure. So... while there has been a delay, there will be benefits to that delay.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But onward.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The following is in no way complete as there are TBAs and some things without definitive release dates yet that we left off, but <b>we have the beginnings of a 2019 release schedule</b>! Behold:</div>

<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Matthew M. Bartlett: late February/early March</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Doungjai Gam: late May/early June</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Jon Padgett: late July/early August</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Michael Wehunt: late September/early October</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">And of course more to be announced!</li>
</ul>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
We have to work out some details but we're hoping to have an extra special reading/Q&A related to the release of the <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/Secret-Gateways-A-Leeds-Dunnstown-and-Beyond-Limited-Hardcover-Box-Set-Pre-Order-by-Jon-Padgett-and-Matthew-M-Bartlett/p/126187566/category=0" target="_blank">SECRET GATEWAYS box set</a>. Speaking of, we'll be updating the product page for <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/Secret-Gateways-A-Leeds-Dunnstown-and-Beyond-Limited-Hardcover-Box-Set-Pre-Order-by-Jon-Padgett-and-Matthew-M-Bartlett/p/126187566/category=0" target="_blank">SECRET GATEWAYS</a> with some artwork and further details. As mentioned above, we have a release date set now, but it's also safe to mention a couple of the artists involved! </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sam Heimer is designing the slipcase artwork for this beauty! And Harry O. Morris is working on the cover and interior artwork for THE SECRET OF VENTRILOQUISM! As soon as we have the artist for GATEWAYS TO ABOMINATION locked down, we'll announce them as well. As for the third and final book, we're still working out details but there will now be FOUR collaboration stories by Jon Padgett and Matthew M. Bartlett within its pages! We're super excited about that!</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And a few of you have been waiting for... our open submission details! <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/submissions.html" target="_blank">They've now been posted on our submissions page!</a> Folks that are patrons at the $5 level on <a href="https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=4241890&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nightscapepress.pub%2Fp%2Ftest-store.html%23!%2Fc%2F0%2Foffset%3D0%26sort%3Dnormal&utm_medium=widget" target="_blank">our Patreon</a> got this news almost two weeks early so if you'd like to keep up on the latest and get the earliest shot at say... Weird For Good edited by myself, Lynne Jamneck, and Jon Padgett, you might want to join us over there. We also post early artwork and will be posting exclusive behind the scenes info and media and more. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, if you can't tell, it's going to be one hell of a year! And that's not showing any signs of changing, so we'll be looking to expand a bit this year. We're in talks with some folks about taking on roles with us and we very well may put out a call for a couple more in order to fill various positions that are needed. So, keep an eye out. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What we're doing is new and different and with it being as charity-driven as it is, it's not exactly profitable. So, I wanted to leave you all with some ways you can help out and get some wonderful stuff in return:</div>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">As has been mentioned before, <a href="https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=4241890&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nightscapepress.pub%2Fp%2Ftest-store.html%23!%2Fc%2F0%2Foffset%3D0%26sort%3Dnormal&utm_medium=widget" target="_blank">we now have a Patreon that offers some pretty awesome stuff</a>.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">When you <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/c/0/offset=0&sort=normal" target="_blank">buy from our webstore</a>, you help us directly. <li style="text-align: justify;">You can now <a href="https://ko-fi.com/nightscapepress" target="_blank">buy us a coffee over at Ko-fi.com</a></li>

This is going to be one hell of a retreat and one hell of a good time and the net proceeds will go to <a href="https://srlp.org/" target="_blank">the Sylvia Rivera Law Project</a>! The Sylvia Rivera Law Project works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence.<br />

The retreat is scheduled for June 29th through July 3rd in Costa Rica and has been set up in association with the <a href="https://www.vrbo.com/395715" target="_blank">Casa Bella</a> resort which is ran by our good friend, the phenomenal writer Erinn Kemper along with her husband. We hope to raise as much as possible for charity with this event. If we manage to sell out all of the slots we'll be able to give the Sylvia Rivera Law Project $10,000! We're really excited about this and hope you'll join us on the beach this summer!robertswilsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01305028306537384037noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-200297564678036538.post-66440990748579189432018-12-03T18:23:00.001-08:002019-05-12T08:07:33.114-07:00Behold: The TOC<ol></ol>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today,<a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/Origami-Dreams-Expanded-Edition-Charitable-Chapbook-pre-order/p/125749559/category=0" target="_blank"> the pre-order for Jon Padgett's ORIGAMI DREAMS (Expanded Edition) Charitable Chapbook went up on the Nightscape Press webstore</a>! This time around, Jon has chosen RAINN, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization as the charity he will be contributing one third of the proceeds to from this physical chapbook edition! We're honored and humbled to be able to help Jon contribute to another fine charity and make a beautiful little book at the same time. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And also on the Charitable Chapbook front, we'll be revealing some artwork for both <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/watch-the-whole-goddamned-thing-burn-by-Doungjai-Gam-Charitable-Chapbook-pre-order/p/123866882/category=0" target="_blank">watch the whole goddamned thing burn by Doungjai Gam</a> and <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/If-It-Bleeds-by-Matthew-M-Bartlett-Charitable-Chapbook-pre-order/p/123836041/category=0" target="_blank">IF IT BLEEDS by Matthew M. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In other news, Robert will be sending out the last responses to folks who submitted their stories to <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/anthologies.html" target="_blank">ASHES AND ENTROPY</a> over the next couple days. We would like to thank all of you who submitted for your patience and for sending us so many great stories to choose from. We really were shocked by both the amount and the array of fine stories that we received.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/anthologies.html" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1082" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yHzt3Q4Ftzo/W5EuKorLpmI/AAAAAAAAIvM/KMAmNUSCxEcxqGcHjy7fix-9n-1MRpSuACPcBGAYYCw/s320/Ashes%2Band%2BEntropy%2Bmain%2Bcover.jpg" width="216" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Speaking of the anthology, we'll finally be getting back to our <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/search/label/aespotlights" target="_blank">ASHES AND ENTROPY Story Spotlights</a> in the next few days. These will run into and beyond the official eBook release on December 11th (if you haven't already, you can <a href="http://mybook.to/ashesandentropy" target="_blank">pre-order the Kindle edition from Amazon</a> or <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/Ashes-and-Entropy-edited-by-Robert-S-Wilson-Pre-order-eBook-edition/p/115214045/category=0" target="_blank">the mobi, ePub, or PDF editions directly from Nightscape Press</a>, same goes for <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/2018/09/ashes-and-entropy-trade-paperback.html" target="_blank">the paperback editions</a>). That said, unfortunately the paperback editions will be coming out a bit late. We'll have more definitive release dates for those very soon.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The year is almost over, and we would like to wish you all the happiest of holidays as we look forward to a very exciting new year of fantastic book releases and charitable donations!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We're excited to announce that Matthew M. Over the past two weeks a lot’s happened in Nightscape Press land. We took our Halloween vacation which was more like a Halloween work-ation. We packed up the car and headed up to Providence, Rhode Island and finalized <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/The-Broker-of-Nightmares-by-Jon-Padgett-Charitable-Chapbook-1-Pre-order/p/112868664/category=0" target="_blank">THE BROKER OF NIGHTMARES</a> by Jon Padgett. Then I headed over to Northampton and met up with Matthew M. Bartlett, who I had some wonderful dinner and conversation with. The next day, Jen and I dropped in on the Arcade Asylum Author Series Hallowe’en reading at the Lovecraft Arts and Sciences Council and saw Meg Smith, Doungjai Gam Bepko, and Daniel Braum read, which was a wonderful treat. We’re excited to announce that afterward, we signed a contract with Doungjai Gam Bepko for her brand new gritty noir tale <a href="http://bit.do/watchitburn" target="_blank">“watch the whole goddamned thing burn”</a> which will be published as part of our Charitable Chapbook line likely early next year!</div>

For those who don’t already know, each title from our Charitable Chapbook line comes out in a physical limited and illustrated chapbook edition that gives one third of its proceeds to the charity of its author’s choice (the other two thirds are split evenly between the author and Nightscape Press) and then six months later an eBook edition is released that gives 40% to the same chosen charity (another 40% goes to the author, and Nightscape Press keeps the remaining 20%). Gam chose <a href="https://www.translifeline.org/" target="_blank">Trans Lifeline</a> as the charity her chapbook will contribute to!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://www.translifeline.org/" target="_blank">Trans Lifeline</a> is a national trans-led organization dedicated to improving the quality of trans lives by responding to the critical needs of the trans community with direct service, material support, advocacy, and education. Their vision is to fight the epidemic of trans suicide and improve overall life-outcomes of trans people by facilitating justice-oriented, collective community aid. We couldn’t be more super proud and excited to help Gam raise funds for such a wonderful cause!</div>

After Providence, we took the long drive down to New Orleans to meet with Jon Padgett on Devil's Night where he signed all 100 copies of <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/The-Broker-of-Nightmares-by-Jon-Padgett-Charitable-Chapbook-1-Pre-order/p/112868664/category=0" target="_blank">THE BROKER OF NIGHTMARES</a>! It was great finally meeting Jon and chatting with him. Later that night, we sent the first donation off to Jon's chosen charity, the ACLU, for $500! (When we sell out of the rest of these, we'll be sending another $500 their way! There are currently 24 copies left as of this writing! <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/The-Broker-of-Nightmares-by-Jon-Padgett-Charitable-Chapbook-1-Pre-order/p/112868664/category=0" target="_blank">Go get one!</a>) Then, for our last night in NOLA, we had a wonderful Halloween at the Music Box Village which was a hell of an interesting experience.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now that we’re home, I’m finishing up slush reading and editing for <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/Ashes-and-Entropy-edited-by-Robert-S-Wilson-Pre-order/p/114849134/category=0" target="_blank">ASHES AND ENTROPY</a>. The plan is to have all stories responded to and the final stories chosen in the next week and a half and then it’s headlong into formatting and production. So, if you’re still waiting on a response from me for that, know that you’ll receive it very soon. As for our recent novel submissions call, we’re planning to have all responses out by the end of the year.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back on the chapbook front, we are currently working on Charitable Chapbook subscription options and should have that finalized soon. When that’s sorted, we’ll be offering our 2019 subscription package most likely on our <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/c/0/offset=0&sort=normal" target="_blank">webstore</a> as well as via our new and improved Patreon page that we’ll be launching soon. This subscription package will include each chapbook we publish in 2019 as well as some really cool exclusive bonus stuff that I can’t talk about just yet. But soon! So soon! Anyway, that’s it for now. Be kind to one another and, U.S. folks, if you haven’t already, be sure and vote tomorrow!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/c/0/offset=0&sort=normal" target="_blank">Nightscape Press Webstore</a> is finally up! All of our current paperback books are available. Titles from authors like Stephen Graham Jones, Lisa Mannetti, Tim Waggoner, Amelia Mangan, Rick Hautala, Rena Mason, and more. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, all of our current eBooks will take longer as they are tied up with Kindle Unlimited exclusivity. But in late November that will end and they will go up in the eBook section of the store. Meanwhile, you can now pre-order the eBook editions of both <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/Ashes-and-Entropy-edited-by-Robert-S-Wilson-Pre-order-eBook-edition/p/115214045/category=0" target="_blank">ASHES AND ENTROPY</a> and Jon Padgett's <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/The-Broker-of-Nightmares-by-Jon-Padgett-Charitable-Chapbook-1-eBook-edition-pre-order/p/115212355/category=0" target="_blank">THE BROKER OF NIGHTMARES</a> over there directly from us. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Speaking of pre-order, ASHES AND ENTROPY is now available for Kindle pre-order on Amazon! If you don't already know the details of this book, it's an anthology of cosmic horror and noir/neo-noir edited by Robert S. Wilson. It will include new stories by Laird Barron, Damien Angelica Walters, John Langan, Kristi DeMeester, Jon Padgett, Nadia Bulkin, Jayaprakash Satyamurthy, Lucy A. Snyder, Tim Waggoner, Jessica McHugh, Paul Michael Anderson, Fiona Maeve Geist, Max Booth III, Lynne Jamneck, Greg Sisco, Lisa Mannetti, Nate Southard, Erinn L. Kemper, Matthew M. Bartlett, Autumn Christian, and more. The book is beautifully illustrated by Luke Spooner of Carrion House Illustration and the release date is set for December 11th of this year.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, our very first <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/limited-edition-chapbooks.html" target="_blank">Charitable Chapbook</a>, Jon Padgett's <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/test-store.html#!/The-Broker-of-Nightmares-by-Jon-Padgett-Charitable-Chapbook-1-Pre-order/p/112868664/category=0" target="_blank">THE BROKER OF NIGHTMARES</a>, is over halfway sold out with only 44 copies remaining, so, if you haven't already, now's the time to grab one up before they're gone. One third of all proceeds from the sale of this fantastic novelette will go to the ACLU. As soon as these sell out, we'll be sending a nice big payment of $1,000 their way and nothing could make us happier right now as publishers. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We'll be unleashing more <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/limited-edition-chapbooks.html" target="_blank">Charitable Chapbooks</a> as time goes on, and our <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/submissions.html" target="_blank">charity novel line of books is currently open for submissions</a> as well, so we hope to have charitable novels for sale starting sometime in 2019. We're also <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/submissions.html" target="_blank">currently open to submissions to writers from underrepresented demographics for two slots in ASHES AND ENTROPY</a>. So, if that applies to you, be sure to get a story submitted before the end of September!</div>

Here they are, all three covers for ASHES AND ENTROPY! Each cover image links to the corresponding pre-order link of the anthology for that edition. These covers were selected from our cover contest and were chosen based on a number of criteria including aesthetics, textual design, and how accurately they depicted the book they would be used for. Included with each of these are mock-up full spreads to give an idea of what the full book will look like. They do not however, include the final TOC as that is still yet to be updated due to our current <a href="http://www.nightscapepress.pub/p/submissions.html" target="_blank">open submissions call for writers from underrepresented demographics</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

First we have our contest winner and retail cover created by Pat R. Steiner:<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Time for another <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/875540908/ashes-and-entropy" target="_blank">ASHES AND ENTROPY</a> Story Spotlight! Today's beacon of anti-hope shines on Nate Southard's "Ain't Much Pride." "Ain't Much Pride" is a nautical tale of a mob henchman and his boss and cohorts hiding out at sea from "the feds." But something unfathomable lurks beneath the water waiting for them and, like our anti-hero, it's hungry for more than just fish.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Nate Southard is the author of Bad Dogs, Porcelain, Will the Sun Ever Come Out Again?, Red Sky, Lights Out, and Just Like Hell. When he isn’t writing scary stories, he’s probably cooking. Usually Thai food or fried chicken. He loves fried chicken.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Nate lives in Austin, Texas with his girlfriend, a dog, and two cats. The cats are total assholes.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>www.natesouthard.com</i></div>
<i><br /></i>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've loved Nate's work ever since I first read his submission "Mouth" for Horror for Good back in 2011. He continues to write phenomenal raw and emotional pieces of brutal fiction and he was an obvious choice when I set out to make a list of authors to solicit for this collection. And unsurprisingly, he brought that same sense of brutal originality to <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/875540908/ashes-and-entropy" target="_blank">ASHES AND ENTROPY</a> with this story. So without further ado, here is the opening to "Ain't Much Pride":</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nuS9mbIwE-s/W2TrkeFmqII/AAAAAAAAIJo/5Q0Q3iAWwgMUaGoXtcTqTwRqdXpFZQVnwCLcBGAs/s1600/Aint%2BMuch%2BPride.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1000" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nuS9mbIwE-s/W2TrkeFmqII/AAAAAAAAIJo/5Q0Q3iAWwgMUaGoXtcTqTwRqdXpFZQVnwCLcBGAs/s320/Aint%2BMuch%2BPride.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Used to be, I loved fish. Tuna, swordfish,
red snapper, striped bass—found me a chef who knew how to cook it, and I’d
belly up. I’m not talking about deep frying catfish or beer-battered cod,
either. Any goon can do that. Cooking a real piece of fish; that takes skill. Try
to say I’m wrong, you get cuffed behind the ear. Hard.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Now? Man, I hate fish. The look, the
smell, the taste. Jesus Christ. Makes me sick just to think about it. Seven
months hiding out in international waters will do that to you, though. Don’t
matter if you’re on a luxury yacht or not. No steak or pork or chicken on this
floating tomb. Just fish. We eat what we got; we get more. It’s like the circle
of life, except with a skeleton crew, couple of girls, a looming drug
trafficking charge, and so much sea food it’ll grow you gills.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">#<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Boss Wilburn sits in one of the yacht’s
bigger rooms—I know crap about boats, but my guess is it’s a ballroom…maybe a
dining room—in one of his better suits. Months without a dry cleaner have left
it smudged with salt air, but he still suits up every Thursday. Says it’s
important to keep things formal. He insists on formality while doing lines off
Betty Numero Uno, whose name is Cynthia.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">I stand in the corner, hands folded in
front of my crotch like I need to piss. The 9mm is hard against my ribs, but
I’m used to it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Gregory reads him one of the latest
encrypted emails. Wilburn receives one a week, no more, and he’s powerful
enough to afford keeping a lawyer like Gregory on board to explain all of them.
Back when boredom hadn’t chained him to a gold straw, he’d insisted this would
keep us all safe and secure. I want a steak so bad I’ve been considering a
Facebook account so I can display our location, maybe tag the Feds. Pretty sure
they don’t serve fish in prison.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">“Okay, yeah, sure,” Wilburn says. “Skip
the pretty words and tell me what it means.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">“It means the Feds aren’t tossing the
investigation,” Gregory says. “Another month, maybe, but for right now we’re
staying put.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">“Fine with me. Ain’t it fine with you,
Cindy?” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Cynthia giggles, her stomach spasming, and
Wilburn holds up both hands. “Hold still, dammit! I got two lines left.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">“Sorry, Baby.” Her red hair lies in a
perfect fan on the mahogany tabletop. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">“It’s good, Sugar. We all so good.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">The lines disappear, and I dream of fried
chicken.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .3in;">

Week two of our <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/875540908/ashes-and-entropy" target="_blank">ASHES AND ENTROPY</a> Story Spotlight series kicks off with a truly weird/cosmic horror tale from the amazing Lucy A. Snyder. This is definitely another story that hovers within the inner circle of my original vision for this anthology. A truly weird cosmic horror noir with a brilliant aesthetic and an ending that will almost certainly take you by complete surprise. <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/1947879081" target="_blank">Lucy's latest collection <i>Garden of Eldritch Delights</i> is available in trade paperback for pre-order now on Amazon.</a> I would advise you go shell out some cash for this one!</div>

The Kind Detective is a gritty Lovecraftian tale with a protagonist who is unstoppably kind at his very core, but the case he finds himself smack in the middle of just might pull him up from his roots. Here is the opening scene:</div>

<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">One Sunday at exactly 4pm, Detective Craig McGill was
nursing an Irish coffee and poring over the cold-case murder photos spread
across his cigarette-pocked kitchen table. His eyes ached. There <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">had</i> to be some small but crucial details
he missed the first twenty times he studied these black-and-white snapshots of
death and misery. He was certain, sure as a priest about the truth of a loving
God, that if he just looked at things the right way, he’d solve these grisly
puzzles. Justice would be served. And if a horror could be met with no meaningful
justice, at least grieving families could finally gain some closure.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>A loud <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">bang!</i> made him reflexively dive to the
worn yellow linoleum floor. His ears popped as if he were on a jet that had
taken a sudden 20,000-foot plunge. Vertigo surged bile into his throat as he
rolled sideways to draw the .38 revolver he kept in a holster bolted beneath
the table. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>He crouched
in the shadow of the table, waiting for another <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">bang!</i> None came. It hadn’t been gunfire. Too loud, too low. But it
had come from the street in front of his house. Maybe closer. A bomb? His mind
flashed on the pressure cooker IEDs the narc squad had recovered from a
backwoods meth lab. Who would have tossed a bomb into his yard? <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The local Klan, angry that he’d sent one of
their boys to Angola for murder? Gangbangers? A random lunatic?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>After a ten
count, he crouch-ran to the living room window and peeked through mini-blinds. The
only thing that registered at first was that something was <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">terribly wrong</i> with his yard. But for a couple of seconds his brain
rejected the missives from his eyes because what he beheld was an
impossibility.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>The massive
pecan tree that shaded the front yard of the shotgun bungalow since his
grandfather built it in 1930 was gone. Not exploded, not burned down – <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">gone</i>. It had a canopy as wide as the
house and a trunk he couldn’t get his arms around and there wasn’t a stick or
leaf left of it. Not even the main roots remained. A wide, perfectly
hemispherical scoop of dirt and concrete sidewalk was gone, too. McGill was relieved
that the water and gas mains hadn’t been broken.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Nobody was
visible on his street except for his catty-corner neighbor, Mrs. Fontenot. He
gave her all his pecans every fall, and the pies she made from them were one of
the purest joys in his life. Before he tasted one, he’d scoffed at people who
declared that this or that food was a religious experience. Mrs. Fontenot made
him a believer. His first bite made him declare that she should be a pastry
chef, and she laughed and replied that it would be the ruination of a fine
hobby. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Mrs.
Fontenot was dressed in her gardening hat and matching lavender gloves and
rubber boots and sat beside a scooped crater in her front yard. Her magnolia
was gone. She was hunched over, listing to the side in the way that people do when
they are in profound shock. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>McGill
shoved his pistol in the back waistband of his cargo pants and hurried out to
see if she needed help. The heavy smells of tree root sap and fresh overturned
soil were thick in the humid air. He glanced down at his missing tree’s crater as
he hurried past it. The remaining roots were cleanly severed at the margin of
the hemisphere. What kind of machine could have done such a thing? And why?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>“Miz
Fontenot, are you okay?” he called as he scanned the street for strange
vehicles. His snap judgement that this was the work of criminals he’d crossed
seemed ridiculous now. Someone who could take a pair of big old trees like this
could have taken his whole house with him inside it. But someone did do this
strange, powerful thing, so maybe the perpetrator was watching? The hand of God
hadn’t just scooped out their trees. The universe didn’t work that way. Did it?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Mrs.
Fontenot made no reply to his call, did not move, so he ran over and knelt
beside her.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>“Miz Fontenot?”
He gently touched her shoulder. “Are you okay?” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>She slowly
turned to face him. Her dark face was wet with tears, and her brown eyes stared
wide. He’d once seen that same expression on a small boy who’d watched his
father cut up his mother with a hatchet.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>“Oh …
Detective. So fine of you to visit.” Her voice was as flat as a salt marsh.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>“Did you
see what happened?”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>“I saw … I
saw ….” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>She started
to weep. Deep, wracking, soul-wrenching sobs. People her age who got this upset
sometimes had heart attacks or strokes. McGill wondered if he should call for a
squad, but he wasn’t sure if she had health insurance. If she didn’t, the
ambulance and ER bills might break her. She didn’t seem to be in immediate
danger. Maybe she just needed a chance to rest and gather herself.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>“Can you
stand up? Let’s get you inside. I’ll make you some tea.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>He gently
helped her up and escorted her back into her house. She stopped crying, but her
whole body shook as if she were walking through snow. Shock, definitely. He got
her settled in her easy chair, pulled off her boots, and tucked a crocheted
afghan over her legs so she’d stay warm.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>“Thank you,
Detective. You’re a kind man. Don’t let nothing tell you otherwise.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>McGill
smiled at her and went into her kitchen to put the kettle on. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>When he
returned with a steaming mug of chamomile tea, Mrs. Fontenot was dead.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>The purely
practical part of McGill’s mind told him that a squad wouldn’t have arrived in
time to save her. They just wouldn’t bust the speed limit for a black lady with
vague symptoms, not even if a white off-duty cop was calling on her behalf. And
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">that</i> renewed realization – the system
he served was horribly flawed – made the mess of sadness, anger and guilt stewing
in his skull almost boil over. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>He hadn’t shed
a single tear at any of the terrible murder scenes he’d investigated. Nobody
wanted an emotional cop. It was not <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">professional</i>,
it was not <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">manly</i>, and he would not weep
now for this sweet old lady slumped in her favorite chair, even if nobody could
possibly see him.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>He would
not cry. He would do his job: find out who did this to her. This wasn’t <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">technically</i> murder, but he was sure to
his core that whoever took her tree, took her life just the same. He would work
this like any other case, and he would solve it, and there would be justice.</span><o:p></o:p></div>
